about

Formed in 2006. Split in 2009. Re-formed in 2013 and split again in 2016.
During their often-tumultuous existence, they recorded and released a bunch of 7" singles, two full length albums, a 27-track compilation CD and a couple of radio sessions. They played gigs all over the UK, as well as New York, San Francisco, Austin (SXSW...twice !) Philadelphia, Washington DC, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Madrid and Barcelona. They released records on several different labels, including Squirrel Records (UK) Odd Box Records (UK) and Magic Marker Records (US).
Their music is raw sounding, with scuzzy production, often drenched in crackling fuzz, but always with stunningly good pop melodies seeping through the wall of noise. Most bands, who sound rough around the edges when they play live, will polish up their act when they commit their songs to vinyl and CD...but not The Manhattan Love Suicides. This approach won them a lot of supporters... and just as many detractors. The live appearances were never more than 25 minutes in length, even when they were headlining, and verbal communication with the audience was non-existent. "Hit and Run" was their mantra.

The records and CDs that the band released are now either completely sold out and deleted, or they're hard to find. Sometimes, they even sell for what can be referred to as "silly money" on the collector's market. So, with that in mind - Next Phase : Normal Records issued the "Dirt In The Grooves" 23-track "Best Of..." compilation in December, 2020. Full-to-bursting with all the choicest cuts from The Manhattan Love Suicides' back catalogue. A perfect introduction for anyone who wasn't familiar with them, or just a good way for existing fans to have a whole stack of tunes from this band in one convenient place...

But this wasn't enough to satisfy all those followers out there of fuzz-drenched, lo-fi pop - and so several of these disciples of the discography started firing off messages to Next Phase : Normal Records, demanding more music from The Manhattan Love Suicides vault. Which brings us neatly to this latest release - "Speakers In The Static : The Best Of The Rest Of...". 22 further tracks, featuring long out of print 7" singles, album cuts, plus a few odds and ends. When paired with "Dirt In The Grooves", that's 45 (rpm) jet-sonic blasts of raw and raucous noise-pop to assault your eardrums with. A massive chunk of what comprises The Manhattan Love Suicides entire recorded output, in fact. If it isn't on these 2 releases, then it really isn't worth bothering with.

So, dive into the sound of The Manhattan Love Suicides...a band who believed that anything less than 30 minutes is ample time for anyone to make a point, a band who held the opinion that the music should always be unruly, forceful, a melodic racket with guitars that sound scorched, and delivered with plenty of attitude and a confident air of that most essential thing we've come to know of as style.

about

The Manhattan Love Suicides Leeds, UK

Fuzz drenched, lo-fi, feedback streaked noise pop. This Leeds/London based 4-piece delivered hit n' run 20 minute gigs and fired out a whole bunch of melodic bullets, dipped in sonic cyanide. Their records and CDs were released on various small independent labels, and each one is a masterclass in DIY aesthetics and rough n' raw, post-punk scruffiness. Dress it in black ! ... more
